A cracked MacBook bezel doesn't mean a whole new screen.
A MacBook Air came in with a small crack in the bottom bezel, just above the hinge. The display worked perfectly. The owner had already been quoted for a full display assembly, which on a MacBook runs $390 to $780. That quote is standard, and for this fault it was completely unnecessary.

The bezel is the black border around your MacBook's screen. It is not the screen. That distinction is worth a few hundred dollars, and most people never get told about it.
This one had a crack maybe a centimetre long, low on the left side near the hinge. It happened the way most of them do: the lid got closed on something small, or the machine went into a bag with a charger brick pressed against the corner. Nothing dramatic.

Bezel, screen, display assembly: what the words mean
These three get used interchangeably at repair counters, and the confusion is expensive. Here is the distinction that matters when someone quotes you.
When a cracked bezel is genuinely just a bezel
Not every cracked bezel is a cheap fix, and you should be sceptical of anyone who promises that before looking. These are the signs it is contained to the trim:
The display is perfect. No black patches, no coloured lines, no flickering, no spreading discolouration. If the panel had been hit hard enough to crack the glass over it, you would almost certainly see it.
The crack is on the border, not over the image. Damage inside the visible picture area is panel damage, and that is a different repair.
The lid still closes flush and the hinge feels normal. A stiff, gritty or uneven hinge suggests the whole lid took a twist, which can mean more than trim damage.
Nothing is lifting. If the panel edge is separating from the lid, or there is a gap you can catch a fingernail in, that needs looking at properly before anyone quotes anything.
Why so many MacBook owners get quoted a full display
This is not usually anyone being dishonest. It is how most repair supply chains work.
Apple's own service process for display damage is to replace the entire display assembly. It is fast, it is consistent, and it is guaranteed. Most third-party shops follow the same path because assemblies are the part they can buy, and swapping one is a predictable job with a predictable margin. Component-level work on the lid is slower, fiddlier, and needs someone willing to do it.
So when you walk in with a one-centimetre crack in the trim, the honest answer from a lot of counters is genuinely "that's a display assembly," because that is the only repair they perform. It is worth getting a second opinion from somewhere that does board and component-level MacBook work before you spend several hundred dollars.
What we do instead
We start with a free diagnostic and actually look at the machine: panel output, hinge movement, lid seating, and whether the damage is contained to the bezel. Then you get a fixed price in writing before anything happens.
If it is bezel-only, we keep your original Apple panel. That matters more than people realise: aftermarket MacBook assemblies vary in colour accuracy and brightness, and once your original panel is gone you cannot get it back. Keeping it is both cheaper and better.
If we open it up and find genuine panel damage, we tell you, and you get a real quote for the assembly instead. What you will not get is a display assembly quote for a trim crack.
What MacBook display work costs
For context, here is where the numbers sit on our bench: display assembly $390–$780, top-case and battery $220–$480, logic board repair $280–$720. Bezel-only work sits well below all of those, and we quote it after the free diagnostic rather than from a photo.
Most bezel jobs are done within a couple of days, and everything carries our 90-day warranty.
FAQ
Can a cracked MacBook bezel be repaired without replacing the screen?
Often yes, when the damage is limited to the bezel and the panel behind it is undamaged. If your display shows a normal picture with no lines, black patches or flickering, the crack is very likely contained to the trim. We confirm it with a free diagnostic before quoting.
What is the bezel on a MacBook?
The bezel is the black border surrounding the screen, between the picture area and the aluminium lid. It is cosmetic trim covering the panel edge. It is not the display itself, which is why damage to it does not necessarily mean you need a new screen.
Why did Apple quote me for a whole display assembly?
Apple's service procedure for display damage is to replace the complete assembly: lid, panel, bezel, hinges and cables together. It is quick and guaranteed, but it means a small crack in the trim is priced the same as a shattered screen. Independent shops that do component-level work can sometimes address the bezel alone.
How much does MacBook display repair cost in Mississauga?
A full display assembly runs $390 to $780 depending on model. Bezel-only work is significantly less. We give a fixed written quote after the free diagnostic, so you know the price before any work starts.
Will I keep my original Apple screen?
Yes, when the repair is bezel-only. That is one of the main reasons to avoid an unnecessary assembly swap: aftermarket MacBook panels vary in brightness and colour accuracy, and once the original is removed you cannot get it back.
Do you repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro bezels?
Yes, both, across Intel and Apple Silicon models. Bring it in to our Mississauga shop, or mail it in from anywhere in Canada with a prepaid insured label.
Don't pay for a display you don't need.
Free diagnostic, fixed written quote before any work, and we keep your original Apple panel wherever the damage allows. Walk in to our Mississauga shop or mail it in from anywhere in Canada.
