What "blue light then shuts off" actually means
People call this the PS5 Blue Light of Death (BLOD), and the wording matters because it points at the cause. There are two very different "blue light" problems:
1. Blue light that stays on with no picture — usually an HDMI / display path issue (bent HDMI pins, HDMI chip, or video output). 2. Blue light that comes on and the console shuts off after a second or two — that's this one. The console is trying to power up, hits a fault on one of its power rails, and protects itself by shutting down. That's almost always a power-delivery problem on the board, very often a shorted component.
Step one: the board tells you it's shorted
Instead of guessing, we put the board on a bench power supply and feed it the voltage the PSU normally would. A healthy PS5 draws a small, controlled startup current. This one pulled a hard, steady current and went nowhere — the signature of a short circuit: somewhere on the board, power is being dumped straight to ground. That short is exactly what makes the console kill itself after ~2 seconds.
Step two: find the short with a thermal camera
A shorted part carries all that current, and current makes heat. So we feed a small, controlled amount of current into the shorted rail and watch the board through a thermal camera. The faulty component lights up as a hotspot while everything around it stays cool.
The culprit: a shorted capacitor on a power rail
The hotspot landed on a small capacitor on one of the board's power rails. These caps sit across the power lines to keep voltage clean and stable. When one fails shorted, it ties that rail straight to ground — so the moment the PS5 tries to bring the rail up, the power management sees a fault and shuts the whole console down. Two seconds of blue light, then off.
The fix
Under the microscope, we removed the shorted capacitor. The instant it came off, the short cleared and the current draw on the power supply dropped to normal. We fitted a fresh part, reassembled, and the PS5 powered on and stayed on — full boot, white light, picture, the works.
