Shattered iPhone 17 Pro Max glass? We replaced the glass, not the whole screen.
This iPhone 17 Pro Max came in with the front glass badly cracked, but the display under it still lit up and worked perfectly. A full screen for a phone this new runs into the hundreds. So we did it the harder, cheaper way: separated just the broken glass, kept the original Apple OLED, and laminated fresh glass back on.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s outer glass was shattered, but the OLED underneath still displayed and touched perfectly. On the newest Pro Max the glass is bonded to the display, so most shops (and Apple) quote a full screen replacement that costs a few hundred dollars. We instead de-bonded the cracked glass, cleaned off the old adhesive, checked the panel under a dust lamp, aligned new glass, and re-laminated it to the original display in our OCA machine. Same Apple OLED, new glass, a real saving. It’s specialist work that needs the right equipment, which is why not every shop offers it on a phone this new.
Why a full screen on a 17 Pro Max costs so much
On a modern iPhone, the front glass and the OLED ProMotion display are laminated together as one fused unit, bonded with a layer of OCA (optically clear adhesive). Because they’re stuck together, the easy fix is to throw away the whole assembly, cracked glass and perfectly good display included, and bolt in a new one.
On the newest Pro Max that gets expensive fast. A genuine screen is one of the priciest parts Apple sells, and aftermarket panels for a phone this fresh are both costly and a downgrade, you often lose true brightness, colour accuracy, or full ProMotion behaviour. When only the glass is cracked and the display works, paying for a whole new screen means paying for a part you don’t need.
The smarter fix: separate the glass, keep the OLED
This is the part that takes equipment and a steady hand. We carefully de-bond the cracked glass from the display, lifting the broken layer off while leaving the OLED and its polariser underneath intact. Done wrong, you crack the panel and turn a glass job into a full-screen job. Done right, the original Apple display comes through untouched, with all of its brightness, colour, True Tone and ProMotion exactly as it left the factory.
Cleaned, then checked under the dust lamp
With the old adhesive removed, the display gets inspected under a green dust-inspection lamp. That harsh side light makes any speck of dust, lint or leftover glue jump out before we bond anything, because a single trapped particle would show as a permanent spot under the new glass. Only once the surface is spotless do we align a fresh piece of glass to the panel.
Laminated back together
The new glass is bonded to the original display in our OCA lamination machine, which presses the two together under controlled vacuum and heat with a fresh adhesive layer, then cures it. This is what re-creates that factory, gap-free, laminated look, no bubbles, no haze, no air pocket between the glass and the screen. A bubble-prone hand glue-up doesn’t come close, and on a Pro Max panel there’s no room for error.
The result
New glass, original Apple OLED, fully laminated, and working exactly as it should, Face ID, ProMotion, True Tone and all. The customer kept the display they paid Apple for and only replaced the part that was actually broken.
